MISTAKEN RATIONAL

EVERYWHERE AROUND US are fully-functional 'heavy-duty' HMA layers (pavements) suffering neither surface nor structural damage after 40-50 years in service despite of multifold increase in tires contact pressure (TCP) and frequencies of industrial traffic - ALL under extreme T amplitudes, and in unfavorable moisture conditions. Such mixtures haven't been modified and no additives were used. They were subject to 'zero' maintenance.

The 'co-existence' of perpetual layers / pavements next to the obvious and less obvious ASPHALT FAILURES - probably designed and constructed by the same locals / ’distinguished experts’ - is the utmost proof of the widespread erroneous engineering logic and judgment skills.

Such mistaken logic inevitable leads toward further unbalanced approach and over-simplification in asphalt constituents and asphalt composite material characterization pushing aside the key issues - the 'spatial packing & competition for space among constituents' under varios compaction modes and T conditions - due to inability to generate universal solutions. One or several 'trendy' blame factors are regularly chosen and 'investigated' in well financed research programs. The favorite is some kind of dynamic testing of, in fact,
physically 'undefined' mixtures exposed to accelerated heavy loads & aging conditions in order to figure out 'phenomena' such as rutting, fatigue cracking, etc. A modified binder seem to be the favorable research constituent which in combination with VTM should give the answer for premature aging and more 'reasons' for introduction of even more expensive modifiers. Further, the blaming list wouldn't be completed without so called 'PERFORMANCE BASED SPECIFICATIONS', as a big contributive part to a new round of mostly futile R&D... ALL OF ABOVE MENTIONED FADES OUT AND IS REDUCED TO THE RIGHT MEASURE WHEN FACED WITH RATIONAL-LOGICAL ARGUMENTATION. SUCH ARGUMENTATION DOMINATES BOTH THE NATURE AND THE SUCCESSFUL MATERIAL SCIENCE AS WELL.

    I From the beginning of asphalt mixture design it was desired to UNDERSTAND LAW OF ‘SPATIAL’ PACKING (packing, interlocking, re-granulation, densification under various compaction modes) OF SKELETAL AGGREGATE PART and its measured interaction with other FUNCTIONAL VOLUMETRIC CONSTITUENTS - binder mortar and the accessible voids - in ANY STATE DURING COMPACTION and ESPECIALLY at DENIED COMPACTION STATE. (Of course, the impact of the other aggregate properties such as shape, texture, interactivity, origin had to be also taken into account either direct or indirect way.)

Bear in mind that every crude oil is different, so every asphalt is different and will react differently in pavement over time. PRIME FOCUS IN DENSE GRADED HMA DESIGN IS ALWAYS ON THE SKELETON (Think About Unbound Layers First...) This functional optimum integration of constituents excludes any 'excess'/ 'deficit' in relation to a by performance criteria selected binder ALL HAS BEEN SOLVED SUCCESSFULY!
